Up North

Over Easter weekend we took a little extended family vacation up north. We’ve done this before but not over a holiday weekend, so it seemed extra special this time. We have also never stayed in such a NICE “cabin.” Really, a five bedroom, four bathroom house. I love these trips so much because they really are just about spending time together with family and soaking each others company in. We never go out to eat. We each sign up for meals and cook. That might sound horrible to some, but I LOVE to cook and I love to see and eat what other family members have made. Since it was Easter weekend there was lots of talk with the kids about Easter and the meaning of it. They dyed eggs together (and maybe broke a few…okay, maybe MY daughter broke quite a few) and hunted for eggs on Easter morning.

The sun didn’t decide to come out until the tail end of our trip but it was beautiful up there either way. While the lakes down here are mostly open water again they were still frozen up there. There’s lots of nature walks, swimming at the pool, and wine. To my daughter these trips are gold. She spends the whole weekend with her cousin she adores and her Nana and aunts and uncles. Vacations don’t have to be fancy (although our cabin sure seemed to be!) and spendy. They don’t even need to be warm and sunny or in paradise.  However, they do need to be fun, laid back  and full of good company!  I hope these trips are the trips that my daughter will one day look back on fondly and remember.
